    edelbrock 750 carb

I was just curious about the Edelbrock carbs. I have been fighting the idle on my truck for too long!! I had the Quadrajet rebuilt and it would not idle in gear no matter what I did. Evidently there is something wrong with the idle circut, or the guy has just breathed in too much carb cleaner!! I put an Edelbrock 750-# 1704 on it and it will idle fine, Iknow I need to put a kit in it. I smell gas after shut down. Do these leak down like the Quadrajets do???, or is just dirt in 1 of the metering rods letting gas get by??

Because of the design Edelbrock AFB/AVS clones do not leak down like the Q Jets, nor would gunk in the fuel bowl ( dirt in 1 of the metering rods letting gas get by) cause it.

My experience is the most likely causes in order would be

    1. Float level set too high. The factory float level is often fine, but at higher altitudes or on very hot summer days after the engine is run and then shut off the gas will expand in the fuel bowls (heat soak) enough to flood over into the intake. This is especially true with ethanol fuels. The fix is to simply set the floats a little lower.

    2. The newer versions of the carbs sometimes have composite floats like the Q Jets, and like them overtime can soak up enough fuel to be too heavy and require replacement.

    3. Finally it could be the needle and seats need to be replaced.

I put a edelbrock kit in it. It evidently had had some moisture in it @ 1 time. I cleaned the hell out of it, but still get the gas smell after shut down, and a hard start after sitting for a while. I do have a regulator on the fuel system set @ 3.5 lbs.
Mabey I'll try droping the floats a bit and see what happens as you sugested. Also I noticed the pump rod was in the middle hole, not in the top as it should be according to the kit, so I moved it to the top and set the length of the rod to 19-32nds.
    Thank you for the input.
