now guys play nice lol. i knew mello was joking all along and i appreciate your opinion very much 34 40. always liked the style of first gen monte. I know that it is just a chevelle with a different body but to me when you go to a local show there are alot of chevelles but no montes. the last one i had was a good screamer before i put the 472 in her and i hope that i can do the same with this one.

Are 1st gen Monte's that hard to find? The one you posted has had quite a few things done that you're going to be reversing, like the fuel cell and rear gears. You won't get much for a used fuel cell, and the gears are no big deal but again the ones coming out are pretty much wall art or scrap unless you find someone who's willing to invest the parts & labor to install them not knowing if they're good or not. Then there's that hood..... and the $2200 asking price with no drive train? Just wondering if maybe you might find one that's a little closer to your finishing point without so many mods you don't really want?

I am with Roger, don't get so excited and look for a better one that you don't have to rework so much on. Taking your time shopping now will save you so much grief later on.

yes it does have things i want to change. but the hood and interior i am very happy with. charlie talked the guy down to 1800. around here that is a good price for any early 70's car with a solid frame. charlie and his navy buddies want to spend a few weekends in my garage building a engine for it.

find out how big/tall of tire you can get under the back end and the 4:56 gears may not be so bad .. I ran them for years in one of my V8 pintos with a 33 inch tire in back .. and you will learn pretty quickly how far you can go on 12 gallons of fuel .. I like my 8 gallon cell in my stang just fine ...

Barb, another thing would be to consider a 700R4 tranny instead of the TH400. The 0.70 overdrive final gear will really help you on the interstate. If you were able to run a 33" tire like Hoss429 mentioned and keep the 4.56 gears you'd turn 2275rpm at 70mph with the 700R4, but 3250rpm with the TH400, a HUGE difference in mileage and wear & tear.

from the pictures you posted it looks to me like the rear end is slightly narrowed and the wheelwells are slightly widened setting it up for big tires ..
