Chevy Outer Tie Rod Ends
Is there a name for the threaded portion of an outer rod end?
Talking about this part...
Is this part on all outer tie rod ends TAPERED?
Do all outer tie rod ends have the same thread on them?
Thanks to all.

According to this picture it is the "stud", but others call it the "ball stud" due to the ball machined on the bottom end, where the tie rod end is formed around the ball portion.

Yes, all tie rod ball studs are tapered; and No, not all tie rod ends have the same thread size on either the ball stud, or on the female thread for the tie rod connection. The sizes of these threaded connectors will be larger depending on the load being carried, i.e. you'll have a larger castle nut on a 1T truck than you'll find on your average sedan, and the one on your econobox may be even smaller, depending on the weight and load rating of the front end compenents.Roger

Different tie rod ends have different tapers on them, so you have to be real careful. The taper is measured in inches per foot or degrees of taper. Here's a 1 1/2 inches per foot reamer.....which has a 7.15 degree taper to it......

If you mix and match without taking the taper of the ball joint and the hole it is going into consideration, you could put together a death trap.Last edited by techinspector1; 12-02-2014 at 10:36 PM.

Or one with all of the dimensions being questioned - Moog Suspension Parts - Universal Outer Tie Rod Ends May just be more confusing to you if you really don't understand the type of joint....Roger
