Could be as simple as all of the hinge points are dry and need to be greased/lubed. If it worked before ya' gotta wonder why it's funky now.....
Not sure what picture viewer you're using, but for many there's an "Edit" mode at the top? Once there click "Resize" and select a medium resolution, or one for e-mail/attachment. It's a common issue, and there's more ways to resize files than Carter had little pills....Roger

The pivot points on that side look awfully dry to me. What is being used to balance out the other side?Ken Thomas

Can you get a picture that shows the left end, too? That will be the motor, if it's a linear actuator, as it seems to be. I'd still lube all of the hinge points as a starting point, and see where that gets you.Roger

Yep, a linear actuator. Motor, pinion and worm gear driving the shaft in & out. Relays control motor direction. Limits could be torque switches internal to the actuator, hard to tell.
If lubing doesn't help you're going to be searching for some identifying marks on that actuator unit to try to find a direct replacement to keep from having to start from scratch on the drive. Or keep lifting to help the top "up", powering down....Roger

Thank you Roger. .
