Ok. I am using an aftermarket double roller timing set. So it isn't a stock style with retarded timing.

Is there a thinner head gasket that I can use to bump up the compression ratio a bit? Mine is .040

I am planning on doing a few things to the motor soon. Looking for a few suggestions on what I should do. I will be on a $1,000 budget, so I am not sure if I can afford any head work. I will also be keeping stock exhaust manifolds to keep original appearance.

Should I just get it dyno-tuned?
Put a slightly bigger cam in?

Just looking for a few ideas, before I decide what I'm going to do.

    Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Tuning is always a good idea. You gotta know if the motor can pull through the whole range.

If nothing else, do the gears as suggested by Jerry. but right now you don't even know how many rpm's you'll be turning when going through the traps.... You really need to do a couple runs so you'll have a baseline to work with.

Who knows... maybe it's faster than it feels to your "butt dyno"!

aftermarket double roller set does not mean anything--where the timing is what matters-what are the manufacture and part number of the set and any pics of it?
Have you got rid of the cats? Do you have adjustable valves? or just the oem solid bolt downs? If so , there are bearing centers you can use but will still need to have correct pushrod length. put an ign retard system in it so you can pull the timing back in high gear on the quarter mile and use around 40* total and retard it 3, 4 degrees when shifting into high.

    best gas you can get-----
    techinspector1 and NTFDAY like this.

Timing set I used had 3 keyways. I installed it with the 4 degree advanced setting.

Ignition timing is set with 14 degrees initial 36 degrees advance. With full advance at around 2800 RPM (I installed lighter springs)

    Valve train is stock.

    No Cat converters.

I don't think there is a dist cam with a 11* slot-do you have a part number off it???
Over the years I have welded up the slots on many stockers and then with porting tools ground out the length to what I wanted-back in the days of the big truck engines the short slots were easy to get---some of those concrete delivery, garbage trucks, etc that you are passing going down the road had a few of the best parts out there-short ignitions, long stroke cranks and rods---
