    TH400 case change

    Hello all,
Well in all my grace I dropped my built TH400 and cracked the case like an egg. The transmission has no ID tag. I bought a new TH400 case and intend to change out the internals my self. On second thought I thought I would ask you all what I need to know in advance. For instance are all 400 cases the same? Can I get a book that may help me? I can do just about everything but have never worked on an automatic.
    Thanks
    TwoLane

Good to see you here 2lane, don't know your level of experience or ability, also there are some tools required that are only used for trans work, do you have this level of equipment? There are more than a few manuals / books to guide you, Google TH400 overhaul and see the results.

It isn't terribly hard to tear down a Turbo 400. But reassembly with out damaging the seals and o-rings takes some practice and knowing the "feel" and that's where experience comes in.

I don't want to discourage you from doing this, just want you to be honest with yourself about your abilities.

I can see that maybe I should take this to my tranny guy. I still need to know if my new case will work. Can you all give me some direction on that? Only thing I know is that the valve bodies are the same.

IMO you'd be well served to take the cracked case unit and your new case to your tranny guy and have him do it right. If the case is somehow different he should be the guy that can tell you, and he also should be the best guy to get you the case you need if it's not right. My opinion, and what I'd do.

Without getting into manuals and interchange books it'll be a swag" (simple wild a_ _ guess) I've got a 50/50 shot at it so I'll say yes.

But you haven't shared numbers or even pictures so who knows. I gotta agree with Mr.Spears, take it all to a local tranny guy and have him look it over..

Then let us know how it works out.

I would be happy to share numbers but there are no tags on either case as I stated above. Photos will do no good as they just look like TH400 cases. Thanks

I did some research and think I answered my question. TCI, Hughes, and B&M list only one transmission rebuild kit for TH400 from 1965 to 1990. That leads me to believe that I am good to go!
Thanks for your comments and time.
