Helping a buddy sub fram his pinto.

I am helping a buddy sub frame his 77 Pinto station wagon.
I know the wall thickness on 2X3 is 118 to 120 max.
But he wants to use 1 1/2 steel tube for a cross member for the rear trany mount.
Should that also be 118 to 120 max wall thickness??? Not sure, No it's not Dom either.

You can buy any size square or rectangular tubing with just about any wall thickness you want, depending on the chemistry of the metal (mild steel, stainless, chromoly, etc.). Most automotive applications will use 0.118" to 0.120" wall thickness, but occasionally a fellow will want to move up to 0.134". For instance, on a mild steel rollbar or rollcage, the metal will check thin if you buy 0.118", so a racer might move up to 0.134" just so the sonic beeper will ping thick enough to meet the rules. You won't have to worry about that though, I'm just giving you a little detail about tubing.

If I were subbing a Pinto, I'd use 2.000" x 3.000" x 0.134" welded mild steel rectangular tubing...... 1.500" x 1.500" x 0.134" welded mild steel tubing will work well for the rear transmission mount. This is not a critical application, so DOM (drawn over mandrel) will not be necessary. Welded tubing will work fine.
