speedometer bounces
I just replaced the tranny(TH350) in my 81 Firebird awhile back, and I noticed the other day that the speedometer was bouncing all over the place. What did I do wrong during install? Not really important, just annoying.....like me and all my stupid questions

A bouncing speedometer needle is usually due to lack of lubrication on the inner cable. Remove the inner cable and lube it with white litium grease. I stick a blob in my hand and while you feed the cable back into the case, run it through the blob. It works for me. But then again, I could be wrong.Mike Casella

I'm bettin' pro60chevy is right. Also, make sure there are no kinks in the cable. once installed from the tranny side, you should be able to turn the inner cable with your fingers without feeling any tight spots."PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.

Another way to lube is to disconect from speedo and use powdered graphite, but ONLY if you have NEVER used any kind of grease, in case you don't know it can be found at most auto parts stores in a small spray tube for a buck or two.Last edited by viking; 04-18-2004 at 02:29 PM.

Does anyone remember a few years back when those air powered speedometer cable lubricators came out. I was working for an auto parts store at the time, and one of our customers bought one cause it was something new. He didn't feel as though he had to read the directions about how to use it. He missed the part about cutting the air pressure down. Yep, he blew the speedometer head right out of the dashboard and splattered grease all over the interior. I though I'd never stop laughing.Last edited by pro60chevy; 04-18-2004 at 02:37 PM.

Don't be suprised if the speedo cable is coming unravelled. this causes them to bouce and make noise. When you put a new insert in, lobe it good with graphite lube.

I wonder if the original speedo bouncing problem has been fixed. I damn near lost track of the original question.Mike Casella

In order to make it an absolute collectors set, all the prefixes must be the same.Mike Casella

For sure!! I recall Jim's torsion bar suspension on at least one of his builds, but I'm not sure which one! Maybe the Track T?? He's a talented builder.
