    sbc intake question

    Hi guys,
I have a small block chevy from the "70s with a stock intake manifold and a Rochester quadaijet. I want to eliminate the dark discolored areas on ea. side of the manifold. Can I swap the divorced choke to an electric choke and block or partially block off the heat crossovers to accomplish this? or any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Welcome to CHR!

Not sure exactly what you're looking to do. By the discolored areas do you mean directly under the carb where the manifold bolts are? Is your intent to then repaint the manifold? Is the manifold off the engine? If so, go after the discolored area with a wire brush in a drill motor as you can't hurt the cast iron.

As to the choke - yes you can, but it requires a kit to do such that will set you back $75 which may be better spent on a new carb rather than a 40 year old unit.

Snap a picture or two and give us some more information on what your goals are.

    Again, welcome to CHR.

I plan on powder coating the intake and don't want the powder to burn off or discolor like the paint did on each side where the heat crossover ports are.

find yourself a cheap yard sale aluminum intake that does not have the EGR ports or make some metal gasket fillers to stop off yours .. or there may be other options .. i`m a ford guy ...

If I remember right, I think they give you a choice in the gasket set for blocked or open EGR. They both come in the kit. It's been a long time since I've done one. I agree on the carb, a new Edelbrock would be a better investment than a 70 dollar choke kit.

Use the block offs in the gasket kit and a well rebuilt Q-Jet will run rings around the Carter clone. If I was going to change carbs I'd opt for a spread bore Holley before I'd waste money on a Carter clone.

Unless you have a specific reason to keep the stock manifold, junk it and get an edelbrock performer.

Ya might want to check the pt# on that manifold. and do some research It's been a lot of yrs ago and my memory is not what it was but I was in the emissions industry for many yrs and I think this manifold is 1965 or 1966 beacuse in 1967 there was the predessor to the egr was called a gulp valve and had a large port behind the carb. and then I think in 69 or 70 the came out with the e.g.r. that used that port. And the manifold in the pic. does not have that port If iI am right this part could have some value to some of the restorer guy's ( just a thought might be worth checking out.) OH! b.t.w. that port that has te paint burned off is a carb heat port to speed up the warm up of the carb when cold beacuse a cold eng requires a much richer A/f mixture and that increases the co emissions

Check your local craigslist I've seen the Performer intakes go for $50-$75 like this: Edelbrock Performer 2101 Small Block Chevy Intake Manifold | eBay

    That's just opening bid.
Filter for ending soonest and keep an eye on it, sometimes you get lucky.

Buy it now is more convenient to be sure.

If you're not in a hurry, then waiting for an item to close and "sniping" the bid at the last minute is the way to get a really good deal.

    Watch for shipping fees!
