I've always see these on cars, but I've known how they work, other than putting in a spark plug in the exhaust. I checked out a video install (Stacey David, from an old episode "Trucks")

He said when you turn on the switch, it cuts out the engine spark, directing the spark to the exhaust, which burns the fuel thus creating flames. But, he said,... "this washes down the engine cylinder walls and rings, so change the oil often".

Can damage be done ?

But I have to agree. Just get a bigger Stetson if you want to be seen. Belching flames from the tailpipes? Why??

If I ever had the inkling to do something like this, I'd create a whole separate system and stay off the motor systems.
But again, just because you can do something... does this make sense?

From what I understand, most of the top dogs have flame thowers that shoot liquid propane.

Yes, you can damage your engine with the traditional spark plug in the exhaust. Most of time you have to either apply the choke or pump the hell out of the carb to get enough raw,gas to carry all the way to the tailpipe. Thats what washes down the cylinders and dilutes the oil.

Lol, that's funny.

I never knew that they have it set up that way. Guess I assumed there is enough gas fumes in the tail pipe, and just needed a spark to set it off.

We would just coast along, car in gear and the ignition off.... flip the key on and BAM!

Sure, we lost a muffler or two.. three! But all in good fun right?!?!?! LOL

I don't put mufflers in my "sidepipe kit" that I made years ago. There are pressed in tube shells that have louvers cut in that you can either have them pointing towards the engine that are quieter or like I have them, pointing away. Mine is a little louder, but not too loud.

I researched this after seeing them in action several times, the washing my cylinders down on my motor convinced me to forget it, not worth the chance of shorting the engines life. At our local cruise night we have a guy come in with propane flame throwers, was pretty neat until you really realize its the same thing as taking the ol' brush burner out and squeezin' the trigger, nothing is coming from the motor, it just looks like it, I guess the exhaust velocity throws it a little further maybe, was neat at night, heck he could actually do it with the motor off even...

I agree. I did just watch a DIY propane thrower, pretty cool. He used a BBQ propane tank, but he had two smaller cylinders that I would use. He did not say how long his tank lasted. With apx 55lbs of pressure it shot out around 10" to 12" then further with running the engine. You can leave it shooting until it's out of gas. His muffler tips are tinted blue, which I wouldn't leave mine on to stain my stainless pipes blue.

On top of the "Why??" there's the liability! Can you imagine what some ACLU lawyer would say after you set some guy's plastic lawn chair on fire at your local 4th of July parade on Main Street?

Nothing that I would ever do, just for the liability.

I've thought of it of course. It would be awesome for tail gaters. But twin mounted .50 cals in the front bumper would be equally effective for slow drivers.

Fun to think about though. And it makes good entertainment for Hollywierd.

I knew someone that had the propane setup. He forgot that he was pulling a trailer once and set it on fire while showing off on the interstate. Yes alcohol was involved. The fiberglass trailer burned to the ground.
