Cougar turn signals
A friend of mine has a 70 Cougar XR7. He had but now dose not have turn signals or 4 way flashers. He has all other lights including brake. I was told that the T/S switch was probably bad, so he got a new one but there wasn't anything wrong with the old one. I'm betting a bad circuit breaker. Here in is the problem. The fuse box is marked turn signals, but there is no clip for it and can see there never was. I have no power anywhere in the T/S system or the 4 way flashers. Along with the fact I don't fit under the dash, I changed the flashers for both.
Any ideas??Charlie

Yes checked several times with test light and digital meter. The new switch rings out the same as old one. The switches go bad because Ford did not upgrade them for the Cougar and the Cougar has 4 light flashing instead of the normal 2 and they melt.. I went to the flashers and checked there. If I could find out where the source of power is supposed to be then I could go there. I have been playing with this all total probably better than 16 hrs. Every one I talk to says "The book says its fused in the fuse box" that just is not right. The 69 was fused in the fuse box but not the 70.Charlie

Charlie, it's been way to long but I remember working on a Cougar with sequential turn signals, there was a small unit in the trunk, it held a motor that would turn a set of contacts that would "fire" each lamp. I don't remember where it got power from, but it may be something to look for.
Under edit, it was located right below the lamp if I remember it right... but this was in 80 or 81 I'm thinking....

The motor sequencer had been replaced with a solid state unit in 1970. They do fail (after 45 plus years - go figure).
Here's a couple of trouble shooting sites for this exact issue:

Thanks Glen but I have done both of these sites. What I think I really need is the location of the fuse or circuit breaker. 69 has it in the fuse box 70 has it some where in the car I hope.Charlie

I've not worked on that critter specifically, but in previous troubleshooting similar, I've found the answer in the turn signal assembly.
Take the steering wheel off and figure out exactly how the circuut works with a close inspection of the switch assembly. If that's where the problem is it might be obvious. Otherwise, monitor the voltage and manipulate the switch to see what it is really doing..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

The rear lamps will get power through the brake light switch. it goes up into the T.S. switch - depending on switch position it'll run into the flasher / sequencer then out to the lamp(s).
Follow the power from there???

The picture shows the top left fuse holder labeled as flasher and turn signal but you can't put a fuse there. it is some where else but seems no one knows.Charlie

I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
