Noisy trim rings
After 26 years of listening to the clatter made by my trim rings, I removed them and enjoy the ride much better. However, I don't like the wheels as much without the rings, plus the paint is scarred where the keepers bit into it so that's unattractive.
My question is: what can I do to quiet these down? I don't know the manufacturer, possibly Speedway, and they look to be high quality. The problem is that while they snap on tight and there's no danger of losing them, and they don't come loose, they chatter and ring every time I hit a bump in the road.
If it will help, I can post of picture, but it's the car associated with my login and should appear in the post already.
I searched for any ideas prior to posting this, but if this has been asked and answered, please let me know where.Dorsey

I do not have an answer. But I do know if you try to bend the tabs they could be ruined. Also, Duct tape used to take up any slack is not a good idea.
I have broken a Beauty Ring, and lost a Nova Tall hub lugnut cover by attempting such.
Well, at least you know what NOT to do.

Thanks for the warning about duct tape - I was about to try that. I also appreciate knowing that I'm not the only one with this problem.Dorsey

Dorsey, I'd look at how the retainers are held to the back side of the trim ring, how they maintain tension, and how they're kept tight on the rings. One of the hub cap places made a short video showing several retention methods, and why they get noisy or fail. Maybe one of them will help, but if not post a picture of the back side of a ring and someone may see the problem. Here's a link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=7dapwvMYaEwRoger

That last post looks like a broken link, but if you click on it, you'll see the photo. It's been a while since I posted a photo and the old host is no longer in business.Dorsey

What about some big globs of silicone ?.
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.
