    starting question

I went to start the car this afternoon (cold) and when I turned the key it started to turn over but didn't catch. Tried it again and nothing! Just a click everytime I turned the key. Now I realize that it could be a bad battery but the interior lights are fine. It had done this once before.

I did notice that a few times before when starting it that when it didn't catch at first and i stopped turning the key I heard a winding sound that went on for 5 seconds. Thought maybe starter or distributor. Would that indicate a lumming problem or is that pretty normal?

I know I can rely on you guys to put me in the right direction, so commence with the tech talk. I'm listening.

Oh yea, It's a 66 dodge charger 440 magnum and i'm assuming the original starter but don't know. Didn't know if that mattered.

I would guess solenoid. If the lights dim when you try to start it (bad Battery or bad connection) if they don't like in your case (Starter / solenoid). Usually. That's a place to start anyway. If you have a load tester you can see how much the starter is drawing when you turn it over. Sounds like your not getting juice to the starter tho. if you were you should see the lights dim some when you trun the key.
    Solenoid.... final answer.
