front end shaking
I just purchased a 29 ford 2 door sedan with a 283 auto it has a straight axle as i am driving down the street the steering wheel sterts shaking and i have to stop the car and start again in order for it to stop I jacked the front up and shook the wheel up and down and from side to side and every thing seemed tight do you think the problem is in the steering box
Thanks

Could be a simple thing like maybe your missing a balancer for either tire. This will cause the steering to shimmy.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

If you have to stop, and then it goes away, probably until you hit another jolt, then you've got a king pin problem. Could be the pin itself, or the bushings in the spindles (4 total), also there should be a trust bearing between the axle and the bottom flange of the spindle on each side, with some thin washers to take up slack. All that should be inspected. A damper is only for minor "undulations", your's sounds more severe than that.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
