Odd clunk
I have a 1993 Chevy 1/2 truck. "Bout 125,000 on it, never replaced anything in the drive train. I'm the original owner, so I know that fer' a fact.
Sometimes, but not always, when i leave a stop light I get a clunk that I can hear and feel. It doesn't happen all the time. There doesn't seem to be play in the u-joints or pinion, Well.... my check consisted of twisin' the drive shaft back and forth a couple times). Wouldn't the problem show up all the time if it were a worn U-joint or something worn in the rear end?
I've had this same thing show up in other trucks I've owned, but always traded em'. This one I plan to keep a while longer, so I'd like to get to the bottom of this. I spoz' if i drive it long enough the problem will find me????"PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.

It could still be ethier the u joint or pinion Pro,i've had alot of trucks myself that had the "clunk" when ya take off or let off the gas real fast and 9 times outa 10 its the U joint and the 10th time its the pinion lol
Back when i was into the truck/four wheelin thing alot of my "truck buddys" always told me the best way to check is to do what you did but to jack the tires off the ground when you do it so that everything "free" when ya check it.

I had that clunk in the Cutlass a few years back. Replaced the U's it ended there. Same with the Grand marquis, but I changed the Us while swapping the tranny on that. Check your spring mounts if that doesnt do the job. Sometimes the mounts will shift and lock back in when you get into it. Ah, the advantage of driving a lot of beatersRight engine, Wrong Wheels

Besides the above info, if the noise is coming from the front it could be your engine or tranny mount. I had a roached engine mount on one of my cars and upon acceleration the engine would shift excessively, and the exhaust would contact the frame resulting in a "clunk". It would also happen if I shifted hard.
I'll bet its the U-Joints though.....

Just a thought here as I am no mechanic, but does it have a 2 piece drive shaft?
If so maybe the carrier bearing?
My neighbor just had that problem and that was the culprit.

1 of these days I'll have ta' jack up the back wheels and have a closer look. It doesn't do it very often. Thanks for the suggestions. It does have a carrier bearing, so i'll check that too.Last edited by pro70z28; 06-24-2004 at 09:04 PM.

hello, I am by no means a mechanic, and I know very very little, but my friends car used to have a clunk, usually occuring when switching gears and it turned out to be a transmission mount. Thats all I can add.

Hey Pro, Run by your local G.M. dealer and pick up some of the special synthetic driveshaft input spline grease, lot of times they'll give ya a little dab for free, pull the drive shaft from the tranny and smear some of that stuff on the splines and reassemble. The clunk ya hear is when the rear end wraps up and pushes the yoke into the tranny, First one that came in doing that drove me crazy trying to find the problem till I found the G.M. bulletin on it and even then I said "YA RIGHT" but it fixes em right up. Done hunerds of em......
