1965 Ranchero
Just picked up a Smallblock C-6 trany for the old Ranchero.
When I had my 67 Mustang I kept braking the C-4's So I ended up Running a FMX trany, which was way Heavy but strong. So this time I thought I would try a small block C-6 Trany. When the Guy brought out the Trany, I almost fell over. I thought these were supposed to be small,And it seems heavier then the FMX was? There Isn't supposed to be any eletronics on it but there is a wire with a plug coming from the throttel / kick down linkage. Whats that? Made the decision to cut the Ranchero and It's been no easy choise. But I want to be Practical and Comfortable in the car.
I want to put a mustang II frontend in it with power steering, a Tilt front end to open like the Vetts. Tub it for a narrowed Dana 60 rear end with some nice fat N50 size tires. And a new solid frame from front to rear. But I'm gonna try to keep the rest of the body looking as stock as possible. I Figure since I'm gonna build new frame I should just go ahead and put that old 351 cleveland I've been working on for the past 5 years in between the rails,RIGHT!!! Does B&M make a trans brake kit for the C-6 Trany Like to do a shift kit to. Any one have experiece with these tranys.
Thanks for any help.

YES, I BUILD POWERGLIDES, WITH PRO TREE BRAKES. I CAN TELL YOU THAT YOU BETTER KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT THEM BEFORE YOU START. I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE C4 OR C6 BUT I HAVE DONE ONE REBUILD FOR ONE OF MY FREINDS AND IT WORKED GOOD BUT I DIDN'T PUT A BRAKE IN IT! I KNOW WITH A GLIDE YOU HAVE TO DRILL THE CASE IN TO PLACES IN THE BACK AND MODIFY THE PUMP ANS INSTALL A DUAL RING SERVO! AND THATS JUST THE START OF IT. YOU ALSO HAVE TO PUT MORE FICTION'S AND CLUTCHES IN THE REVERSE BECAUSE A BRAKE HOLDS THE TRANS IN 1st AND REVERSE AT THE SAME TIME THAT IS HOW IT WORKS AND IF YOU DO NOT MODIFY THE REVERSE AND ADD CLUTCHES TO THE HIGH CLUTCH DRUM THAT YOU WILL GET ABOUT ONE NIGHT OF USE OUT OF IT BEFORE IT BRAKES SOMETHING.

I had a C-6 with a brake, can't tell you much about it other than it worked great. It was built by Vindicator Performance over in Wisconsin. Must be a good reputable tranny shop some place in the area that could handle the mods for you. I've messed with a few automatics, but I leave the hi performance mod work to the pros. Sorry I couldn't be more help.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

The wire comming from the shift arm is a neutral saftey switch which is easily adapted,I put one on the C-4 in my 55 and wired it in the original harness.

Thanks for all the info, I've done quite a few shift kits from B&M and a couple from Doug Nash. Remove the valve body open it up replace a plate a few ball bearings maybe a spring and drill a hole, pretty simple stuff. I was wondering, how much more detailed is it to install a trans brake. I do know my way around a little, should I atempt it, or not.

PS junkyardjeff; How did you figure how to wire that in.
Thats part of the problem with the C4 thats in the car now It keeps jumping in to reverse. And when I raced with the C-4's before they kept braking and that was with a couple of differant shop's building them.Last edited by vara4; 07-09-2004 at 05:38 PM.
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
