    rear axle seal

How hard is it to replace a rear axle seal on my 68 ranchero? Can I do this by myself or should I entice help from one of my buddies with a six-pack. Anything esle I should do when I have this replaced like brakes or anything?

    Thanks for the help

Assuming this is an 8" or 9" rear. All you have to do is remove the wheel, drum and the four backing plate/axle retainer bolts. Then you need a large slide hammer type axle puller. Or something to pull the axle out of the splines with. After you get the axle out you will see the seal. Most are in the axle housing, some are at the wheel bearing. The wheel bearing style will need the bearing pressed off and a new seal/bearing re installed. The brake shoes are usually soaked with gear lube so they will need replacement. Degrease and/or turn the drum. Re install in reverse order....
