If you're not going to race it or do heavy towing you don't need it. It's a valve seat/face temperature thing. Normal driving won't be a problem.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

I just read about an additive called Max Lead 2000 with Tetraethyl Lead. Also read about something called Lead Supreme 130, also an additive.

Go to your local airport and buy yourself some AvGas. It is leaded and I think is around 100 octane. You'll be looking at a price of around $3.00-$3.50 a gallon. My prices might be a little dated.

For pre-1992 cars designed to run on leaded petrol there are two possible problems if they are to be run on premium unleaded.
Firstly, there will be a loss of about two 'octane numbers' from the older four-star leaded and the LRP that replaced it. This will generally be barely noticed although ignition timing might have to be reset to avoid any tendency to detonation (or 'pinking').
Secondly, if the engine has valve seats cut directly into a cast-iron cylinder head or block, the loss of the protective effect of the lead compounds means that under conditions of hard, high-speed use, erosion of the seats can occur.
If the seats recede by more than the pre-set valve clearances, the valves will overheat and severe damage will result.
The long-term answer is to have hard-alloy valve seat inserts installed.
But if ya really got to have it, I believe this is the ONLY lead additive out there http://www.batterystuff.com/fuel/lea...supreme130.htmLast edited by viking; 08-24-2004 at 10:23 AM.

Like Bob said, you don't need leaded gas for normal driving. Your car doesn't burn lead. It's used as a lubricant for the valve seats. You can find lead substitute additives in the automotive section of any Wal-Mart or other department stores. Go read the labels. I use Alemite CD2 in cars that were designed for leaded gas. It's been a while since I used it but I think it takes 1 ounce per tankful of gas. Some others require a whole bottle per tankful. I only used it when I was going to drive more than an hour at highway speeds. You don't need it for driving to school and back or around town.
Irving has a lot of gas stations in Canada but I think it's illeagal for them to sell it in Nebraska. If they could sell you avgas or racing fuel you would have to buy it in bulk. Do you have a place to store $5000 worth of the stuff?" Im gone'

Peace,
i will stick to vikings reply! lead was put in the older cars all teh time for a reason! i just want my car to feel comfortable. scence i have to drive it at 60+ miles per hour on my way to work everyday 15 miles away! and i want my car to be as original as posable. will not accept otherwise UNLESS i have ABSOLUTLY no choise. money is NOT varable in this. so i am pleased to hear about this LEADED additive!

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
