Exhaust tone?
Hi guys.
I'm new here and not sure if this is the place to ask but here goes.
I have a 1952 WillysOverland pick-up with an AMC 360/727 in it. Headers and duals,2 1/2". What I would like is a good deep sounding exhaust. I like the sound of open pipes when idling, that deep gurgling sound. But don't want the rasp of the open pipe after that. I have been on the flowmaster site and listened to the different mufflers and like the original 40 series. But not sure about the idle sound. When you go to the shows and a car comes in at an idle it has that deep gurgling sound similar to open pipes but when opened up has a more refined sound, without the rasp. How can I achieve this sound? I know it's probably a stupid question but I'm asking.
Thanks if you can help me out.
This looks like a really good site with plenty of users. Will have to stop by more now I know it's here.

Hey, Willys, sounds to me as if you might be most of the way there, already. I've always had the best luck for a good deep Rrumble, without the rap, with muffs with larger than "normal" cores in them. On my current 350, I'm using 1-5/8 long tube headers, 2-1/2 inch pipes that are about 24 inches long, and 30 inch "packs" with 2-1/2 inch cores, with short "turn downs right out of the muffs; it DO Rrumble. So much so that it sets off alarms on the yuppiemobiles in parking lots. On the big blocks I've had, the same basic theme, only with turbos, instead of "packs"; I don't really understand why, but the straight thru muffs on the big block rapped, no matter the size. Maybe, if I'd used three inch pipes instead of 2-1/2??? Or, maybe, it was because of the tailpipes. But, generally, the bigger pipe gives a lower frequency tone. Just my nickle's worth.

First of all willys, i like your style. 360AMC, very origional Anyway, as for the muffler question, theres a few things you want to ask. Is it a daily driver? How much noise can you stand for how long your driving it and how much insulation is there in your car? Answer these questions, and you'll find your answers pretty easy.Right engine, Wrong Wheels

Rrumbler has almost the same set-up as I do, only differance is that I have mine dimpled on the tips......makes a good report when I crack it, quiet when I cruise, and rumbles when I putt- no rasp.Jim

Hi guys.
Thanks for your tips. I had on bullets which weren't straight through, they had some sort of baffle in them. You couldn't see through them ,looked like they had a side step inside them. They weren't bad but didn't give me the rumble I am looking for. Will look into packs that are straight through design next unless anyone else has any other suggestions.
As for the AMC 360.. the body is sitting on a stretched grand wagoneer chassis with the front axle narrowed to fit correctly under the fenders. It rides like a caddy not a truck which is great for the long hauls. This is just a toy to play with, street only.
Thanks again
Willys
