you really need some live help, but if you gonna do it anyway you need a, in.lb., and a ft. lb. torque wrenchs and a dial indicator for checking the r/g backlash. use the same inner shim that was under the old inner pinion bearing and that should give you the right pinion depth, then tighten the pinion nut down untill you get the proper pre load on the pinion bearings, add your ring gear and use the dial indicator to get the proper backlash, and then tighten the carrier nuts to the proper bearing pre load. if you use the old inner pinion bearing shim that should give you the right pinion depth and then when you get the proper backlash in the ring gear and pinion the dif. should be right. you should at least get a good book on it, bacause if its not right it want last long. i dont know what the spec are because i all ways did it by looks and feel. and before somebody tell you i dont know what im talking about ive built them for yrs. and ran a modfied. race car a few yrs that used 9" fords and had 10 if them set up for dif. tracks all over the east coast and never tore one up. thats a good test for a dif. ,getting the pinion depth right is the hard part but if you use the shim they use from the factory(its .010 thick i think) thats all ways worked for me.
the spec are...
back lash .005"-008"
brearing pre load 20-25 in. lbs.Mike

Here is a pretty good link i think and it helped me setting up my ford rear, its not much different than any other rear, actually it think its a lot easier to set up than a 10 or 12 bolt. anyway, here check it out scroll down through it, i think it'll help you out. later,Joe

I didn't read but the first 2 or 3 posts but before I forget here let me throw in something I saw on TV the other day. I was watching that new show on Spike TV called Extreme 4X4, now if you can, they put the reruns on all the time. Try watching them because in their CJ jeep build they do they show and explain how to regear a rear end, etc and explain just what Mike said to do about using the old rings or shims shall i say, etc. It helped me under stand a lot more on rear ends until about half way through it they lost me because I was still trying to think of the earlier stuff they did (I am slow and forget real fast). Oh and no I am not old hehe.
But yeah try looking for that episode, they cast it a lot on TV and it should help you heaps.
Good luck!www.streamlineautocare.com

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
