    Steering Box ?? T-bucket

I see alot of guys using Sprint car under dash steering units......
Is there any reason I can't use a regular Corvair steering box under the dash?
Obviously I would need to extend the output shaft , I can do that.
Has anyone ever seen this done?

    thanks!

On T's, the colum is not under the dash, and cannot be mounted that way and have it still look right. I don't know exzactly what you mean by sprint car under dash steering. If ya want to vere from " Traditional " T bucket, you could run a vega box w/ crossed steering, where the drag link crosses over to the other side of the car and attaches to the front end that way. I don't see any way you could use a reversed corvaire box under the dash, because the pitman arm is part of the box, it pushes and pulls the drag link itself, which in turn turns the wheels, I guess if you wanted some weird linkage running under your dash to where the box should be, then to the drag link and front end, I guess it would work but it would be screwed up big time. If your trying to clean up the frame, so not so much stuff is visible, your only gonna put that stuff in the interior which in just about every old car, moreso with T's, everything under the dash is visible except behind the dash like the gauges and switches.

You'd be better off finding a real sprint car setup, a Corvair or similar box is going to require some stout bracing to support that extension. Steering is not the place to experiment.

Many years ago on a super-mod dirt tracker we tried a steering box with an extended shaft---Key word here being tried. It did not work very well. Went to a regular sprint car box and it worked great. They are expensive new, but cheap to pick up at the circle burner swap meets.

Matt, pitman arms are removable, might want to do a bit of research to see what a sprint car box looks like.

I knew pitman arms were removable. I guess I don't see how it would work with a corvair box if the " other end " is on the side, maby it's visulizing it in my head isn't doing justice. I will look up some pics of sprint car box's.
