Unisteer racks?
I've been looking at these Unisteer racks. Any opinions on what they might do on a 4 bar dropped axle set up in regards to suspension geometry??? Sure looks like an easy way to eliminate the old Vega steering box. Pros and Cons, anyone?????Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Bob,
It should be no different from a Vega cross-steer for bump steer, assuming that the drag link is parallel with the tie rod. However, I'm not sure how they do that with all of the mechanism required on the rack side. The installation photo also causes me some doubtss - but then, I've never seen one in person. They also claim more ground clearance, but I'd have to see it to believe it based on the photo below. Finally, it's just too modern looking on a tube axle for me. Howver, if all their claims are true, and it's in a full-fendered rod, it looks interesting.

Friend of mine just put one on his T. You're right on the bump steer..... I was thinking of fabricating my own mount vs. the Vega mount, move it closer to the frame rail, and free up a bit more room on the left side. I like the "feel" on an IFS, but don't necessarily like the looks of an IFS on a non-fendered car......must be the geezer in me or something. Thinking about using it on my roadster, should I ever get started on it......Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I just bought one for a new installation and if one is to follow the directions that comes with it making the tie rod and drag link parallel and the same distance from the ground, the closest part of the bracket is an inch below the frame. The other problen is that the tie rod end hole on the 40 ford spindle is tapered top to bottom and the end has to go the other way. Any comments or photos appreciated.

I've been running one for several years. I bought it at the Nationals and was so excited to get rid of the Vega "play", I was trying to figure out how I could install if before I left. I had bought a Mullins Vega several years before that and it quickly developed the play that Vegas were known for so I was happy to find the Unisteer product.
Once I got home and jacked the car in the air, I installed it with ease. And I must say...I wish I would have thought of it first. The play immediately dissapeared and the car drove more like a slot car.
After several years and 15,000+ miles, the only complaint I have is the driver's side dust boot slipped off when you turn the rack too hard. I called them about it and they said the early units had a shorter boot. They sent me a longer one (at no charge!) and it has worked as promised. I can say Unisteer has been one of the few companies in this sport who stood behind their product.
As for bumpsteer, I would say it is not a cure for bumpsteer. If you have bumpsteer with a Vega, you will still have it with the Unisteer. If your Vega and steering geometry is set up correctly, then you shouldn't have any problems with the bump steer.
The Unisteer fits fine as far as ground clearance too. Again if your geometry is correct, it will be higher than your dropped axle. And that should be good enough to pass your scrubline test.
I know I have recommended them several times and no one has any complaints about them so far. I really like dropped axle hot rods under the pre-35s due to the open view of the fenders. And with the viable options being between the Vega and the Unisteer...I will never buy another Vega. I finally gave away the Mullins Vega I took off to install the Unisteer and certainly have no regrets.
