Ford 9" Question
I have a ford 9" rear housing; It is just the housing and studs, no axle tubes. I am putting a 4 link in my car and need to build a narrowed set up.
I am new to the ford 9". It will not have a super high HP motor. Can anybody give me some advice as where to buy axle tubes, bearings, bearing ends, etc. Everthing to put it together and how to do it myself? What would you do, and don't say buy a finished piece as if I had the money I would. I will have to take it slow.
Thank you,

Also Moser Engineering.

You will have to know several things when contacting them, like if you have a large bearing housing or small (take bearing measurement, they will know what you have) also if you want 28, 31, 35, etc spine axles. 28 is most common, 31 is considered high performance, and 35 up is generally pure race. You may have to have your pumpkin first to measure properly, but not sure about that.
They will guide you through the process of measuring correctly. You are looking at a little over $ 300 ( we just ordered a second set, and that is the price) They will also do whatever wheel bolt pattern you desire.
Oh, welcome to the forum too.

Either Moser or Currie, both are good quality and prices about the same. Strange is good, you just get too pay a bit more for the name, same as the Mark Williams stuff....
Unless you have a fixture to put the housing together with, might be better to buy a fabricated housing made to length.....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

You said you won't be making alot of HP, Get a complete 31 spline rearend out of a truck and have Moser make a set of axles, buy their bearing and stud package (all for under $450.00) and get the posi unit rebuilt with good quality guts and you should be set. I had the same setup under my Prostreet Nova, except I used a spool in it. Busted off 2 sets of axles before going with Mosiers. Dragraced the car and did LOTS of burnouts with it. 2 years later, still no problems. If its not worth doing right, its not worth doing... Donny, MaxxMuscle Custom Painting

i have cut down many fords 9s if your under 500hp with out slicks any of the ford stock axels should take that easy i have had many 28-31 re splined stock stuff and beat the hell out of it there are many back spacing and small bearing big bolt pattern and big bearing big bolt pattern and small bearing small bolt pattern for the back brake mounting plates and like said many spacings to i like the 80s truck housing not a nice looking but built ford tough they do not have the look smooth look but better to find brake parts$$ cheap and they are big drums and work great if you like stoping .very easy to change bolt circle for rims no need to plug up holes on the axles . if your lucky they have the best limited slip four spider unit . you need a jig to cut a axel down and weld the tubes back on i made up mine .but you can buy them i would not cut one down and weld up one with out one thing to is the truck axel shafts are step so they are not tapper like cars.so they can be better to respline then the cars ford roll the splines in not cut them in so if you are just cutting a small bit off the axel is under size that is were they stop were they roll the splines when they roll the spine they are then to size the rolling works up the teeth so just cutting the down a inch so will not work at times you can sometimes put the short axel shaft on the long side and just get one axel shaft cut down if you run the pinon on center i have done this but just can not remember but on the ford two wheel drive rear end housing i think it mine is at 62 hub to hub with just one axel re spline but that was the 31 stocker now i have 35 spline moser in the gto 31 moser in the 50Irish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

Just a note to what Pat said. The Lincoln Marks, late 70's types, have some huge axles that can be cut and resplined quite nicely.... They are also quite wide, so most narrowing jobs will get into the big part of the axle so they can be resplined..... Oh yeah, a lot of them came stock with disc brakes, too.....
A lot of the older passenger car axles are just to thin to be resplined but the big Lincoln ones can easily be cut and splined to 28 or 31 splines....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

If I remember right--the Lincoln Versi ( SP) and Mercury Monark, Ford Granada had a disc brake 9 inch that was narrow and had the beefiest axles of all of them-- good brake setup with an internal expanding drum type parking brake

One thing to remember reqardless of which one you use, just resplining will end up with problems. Thats what happened with mine. The first 2 sets of axles were just stock 31 splines, resplined by Moser. They twisted off after just a few good burnouts (MT 31X18.50-15 street tires on country roads). Factory axles are hardened on the splined portion. Once you cut the axle down, you have removed the hardened section, now its just steel... Spend the money and at least get some good axles, it'll be cheaper in the long run.
2 different times of "jogging" more than 2 miles home, around midnight, on country roads (you hear some WEIRD STUFF) to get my truck to pull the car home on the way home from cruise night was all it took to convince me!!If its not worth doing right, its not worth doing... well resplined axles will work but i would never run a spool with them the guy that resplindes them has to know how to cut the splines so they are not at a point at the top of the spline but if your going to do burn out you will brake stuff i use them on 10 tire cars do not think i would use them on any thing wider .i try do not do many of them they cost way to much money. the fords i had the baby lincoln versi i think that used the screw out E brake work off the brake pads like the big marks , not dums ????? i have had some never used one just sold themIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip
