spring main leaf rebend
My 55 had the rear lowered via the old method heating the main leaf and letting it sag by a prior owner, WAY BAD, WAY WRONG! Now I own the car and plan on replacing both of the rear springs as I have a few sets around. but baby its CCCCOLD out there w a no heat shop and I want to reset the rear car hight to stockso I was thinking of reheating the springs and resetting them to the original hight, NOT to keep you understand just to set rear tire + bumper hights, to see if I want to go reversed eye main leaf or lowering blocks etc. for IN SHOP USE only. I am confident that they would not stay put or even snap after reheating and bending if driven.
The how I got, But what would be the best way- slow cooling or quenching to get them back to stock hight and stay put until I amready to pull them out for replacement(spring)?Last edited by Dgas56; 01-31-2010 at 03:18 PM.

I would say to bury it with sand to let it cool slowly. Don't set it on cement or quench it quickly, that will case harden it and cause it to crack/brake easily.
Is it cold up there in Mn yet? I use to live by the Maplewood mall.

Thanks all I want to do is get into some semblence of the stock hight. Then replace them w the restored set in warmer weather. Yah, We had a rash of below zero days, We're in a heat wave now it got to 10 above but snow is coming tues/wed. Which means more cold afterwords ,always does. The worst id behind us now and we can expect below zero nights and slighly above day temps then we get into the snow time again late Feb and all of March then again some in April if the last few years trend holds.Last edited by Dgas56; 02-01-2010 at 07:12 AM.

Thanks, As long as we are on springs how much drop can be expected from reversed eyes on 55-7 chevy rear springs?Attended my first drag race in 1961 and hooked on cars ever since.

The inside diameter of the eye plus the thickness of the leaf. Rather than reversing the eye, the spring company will probably rearch the spring the other direction. Sometimes this will break the spring leaf. That is the chance you take when it is done this way. The spring can also be dearched in the process to lower the vehicle further.

I heated and got them back into position yesterday afternoon, I do not think I want it lowered in back any more than stock. Its going to be tough as it is to get a 27 x8.20 (255 60 15) tire in there as it is. Thanks guysAttended my first drag race in 1961 and hooked on cars ever since.

If you want to install reversed eye springs later, get a hold of the guys at Krammer Spring Co. ... have them make you a set of main leafs ... great guys to work with. They're in Cottage Grove I think.

Try Standard Spring & alignment. They use to be on Payne ave. near 7th St in ST Paul. They use to re-arch & rebuild springs for our '55-'57 Chevy's all the time.

Sorry for the misdirection. I guess Kammer isn't in business anymore. Have heard of Standard Spring before also.
