64 Elcamino RE into 67 Tempest swap ?
My 67 Tempest has a peg leg 2:56 RE. I have an utterly rusty scrap 1964 Chevy Elcamino w a 283 3spd manual out at the yard that has the RE in it. All the RE's in that year were three series as far as I can find out. Will these RE's swap out? No matter that it has or has not a posi tho I'd like a posi. Its the fact that a three series even the lowest numerical one (3:08) is more attractive that that 2:56 RE. If its slightly narrower that would be even more attractive. (wider rubber )Attended my first drag race in 1961 and hooked on cars ever since.

1964-1967 GM A bodies all use the same rear end, with some variations. In short, it's a bolt in. The major difference is the Chevy uses C-clips to retain the axles.

I had read on a Pontiac web site that the 64-5 GTO/Lemans rears are 1" narrower per side. I wondered if on the Corp GM RE the same held true?Attended my first drag race in 1961 and hooked on cars ever since.

64 and 65 are shorter then66/67 and is 1 inch pre side but will fit in your 67 and 72 is a bit wider then a 69? i am thinking been some time ago but had to trim the wheel well lips abit. but there all A body cars and fit. i had a 65 tempest and could not use my axles from my 66 longer ..that i just put new wheel bearings on them before i spilt it form pinion to back cover. had two 66 GTOs rear reads and a 69 and72 chevelle 12 bolts in it then went to a ford 9 35 spline locker in my 66 GTO you have both?? get out the measuring stick check them but i know all the 64/65 where not as wide . you know the old add ?wide track pontiac???Last edited by pat mccarthy; 08-12-2010 at 05:12 PM.

1" narrower per side would be perfect to get my 4.25" BS 8" wide wheels under the car. The Elco is about an hour away so thought b4 I load up n go I'd ask here first.Attended my first drag race in 1961 and hooked on cars ever since.

your not going to get a 8 inch rim under the back with out a min tub or a very narrow tire the side wall bulge make s the over all way to wide of a tire this is as big as i can go and the wheel lips are trimed all the way to the inner .rear end is shorter then a 65 .thats not a run on my bumper thats the body bag i keep under the car cover should of moved thatLast edited by pat mccarthy; 08-12-2010 at 07:00 PM.
