Rack & Pinion Conversion
I am looking at doing a Rack & Pinion Steering conversion on the rear steer Nova subframe in my Studebaker. I have seen the Steeroids kit and it looks good and simple to do. Only issue is my subframe has been narrowed so I will have to call them and ask if it could be adapted. I hope to use the Chevy pump I have now.
Can anyone relate experience with this kind of swap? What rack did you use? What should I be on the lookout for? Any particular set ups that adapt easily?
Thanks
PatOf course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

Pat,
I don't have a part number for you, and since your clip is narrowed, probably nobody can give you a valid one without more info.
Here's some help though; make sure you get a rack with the tie rod pivots at the same width as your lower control arm pivots. Reference the photo below for the concept. Even though it's a front steer, the concept is the same. Not doing it that way can lead to bump steer. Once you've measured the distance between the two pivots and the spindle arm holes, call someone like Flaming River http://www.flaming-river.com/ and see what expertese they have to share, and if they make something, or know of an OEM equivalent.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

Thanks Bob,
I'll get under there today and take some measurments then give them a call. When I do the project I'll take lots of pictures and make them available to the forum

Pat,
This is what I have learned about the Rack & Pinion. Look the picture!
The tie rod should be parallel with the lower control and the ball joint of the inner tie rod end should be in the same line between the inner joints of the upper and lower control arms to minimise the bumpsteer!
I may be using wrong words but tell me if I'm wrong!
