    Question Disc Brakes

Hi Room - Have a tech question re: Disc Brakes. Am building a chevy powered 46 Ford-74-78 Mustang 11 front and 85 Camaro Iroc Z 10 bolt rear - both are disc setups - is this enough stopping power for a car or that weight? and will I need a proportioning valve for the rears? The Front Mustang calipers are quite a bit bigger than the Camaro rears. Or should I just go with a new Wilwood setup? They get very expensive. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Charlyg.

    Charly,
Your front brakes do the majority of the braking, and the 9" MII rotors are nominal at best. You should look at upgrading to what's called a "Big Brake" kit for the MII. Check ECI www.ecihotrodbrakes.com, they make a good one that doesn't widen the front track.

If you use a 4 wheel disc master cylinder, Corvette is most often used, you shouldn't have proportioning or volume problems, but if you're mounting it under the floor you'll want residual check valves.

Thanks very much for responding Bob - evidently the person who started this project did something with the rotors - they are all 10 1/2 inch rotors. Does that make any sense to you? Where did they come from? ??? Many thanks, Charlyg

Well, sounds like someone already did the big brake conversion. See if you can find a part or casting number on the rotor. It could be GM, Ford, or Mopar, although at this point it doesn't much matter other than it would be good to know if you ever had to replace them. Since we're sneaking up on this as you go I'm assuming you've got calipers and mounting brackets, and they fit.(?). Otherwise, you're back to the rest of what was posted.

    Disc Brakes and Rotors

Thanks Bob - the rear Rotors have a #14026986,a M204, and a W2 stamped on them - no ID as to Ford, GM, or Mopar. The fronts (inside) have a #70 and a small circle with 6 spokes w/a D stamped on them. The outsides H the small circle w/6 spokes and a D26 stamped on them - 90 degrees around is a C195 and 90degrees farther around is a #2429. They also have metric studs. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Again, thanks for all your help- Charlyg

Rears look to be the ones that go with the rear end.

Did a quick Google search on the numbers you posted and didn't find anything. Maybe you or someone else who has more time can dig deeper and find something. Otherwise, talk to Ralph at ECI, I've found him helpfull before. You might start by saying you think what you have came from his company and you're just trying to verify. If it makes sense to him he'll tell you, otherwise he might be able to give you a lead to finding the info.
