Turbo 400
I have a question. I have a 1957 2 dr.ht. 400 cid motor. I found a TURBO 400 TRANS COMPLETE WITH TORQUE CONVERTER, AND FLYWHEEL. THE TRANS CAME OUT OF A 1990 CHEVY SUBURBAN.Will it bolt up to the 400 motor? Are there any electronics on a 400 transmission? I thought the electronics started with the 700r.
Please help
Ralph
P.S. The trany is $150It's not the miles per gallon. It's the smiles per gallon.

Yes the THM400 will bolt up to the 400 with no problem. You may need 2 things for the trany 1 the THM400 used a electronic kick down for the trany and ther are kits out ther for this. 2 the speedo may be electronic so you will have to covert to mechanical your local trany shop can help you with all this stuff. The flywheel you got is it from a 90 350? if it is you will have to ge a flywhell for the 400 both motors are balanced externaly but differant and the flywheels are not iterchangeable. good luck DaveLast edited by 49willysSD; 04-18-2005 at 07:56 AM.

Assuming you have a chevy 400 motor it will bolt up. I am not sure about the newer 400 tranny's but the older ones had no electronics, they did have an electric operated detent for passing gear. You would just have to rig up a switch on your gas pedal or somewhere else if you want to downshift.

Thanks guys! That answers my question. It sounds like something I can handle. I'm going to take a look at it and make an offer.
Thanks again,

As I said in another post, I have never seen a TH400 with an electric kickdown, it's vacuum operated and the speedo should be mechanical too. Maybe some of the very late models before they went to overdrives, but not any I have ever seen. As far as bolting to your 400 SBC, no prob, for that fact should bolt to any SBC. You will have to have a driveshaft made probably, but that is not a big deal usually either. Being that new I guess it might have an electric speedo, but this should be pretty easily converted also.

The only electrical connection I have found on a TH-400 is for the detent solenoid switch. And it will affect the shift performance during driving.
