Hey everyone, new here and don't really know much about transmissions but I have a problem. I have a 67 Impala with a powerglide. I used to drive it every day, but I just got another car that gets way better gas mileage, so I haven't driven the Impala for a while. About 2 week after I parked it I noticed a huge puddle of transmission fluid under the car. I cleaned it up, but was unable to tell where it was leaking from. I have never had a leak before. I replaced the pan gasket, because I don't know anything about transmissions and it seemed like a likely place for a leak. But that didn't fix anything. A while later there was another huge puddle under the car. I called a transmission place out here and they said that the powerglide pan wasn't big enough to hold all the oil in the converter, so if you didn't drive it for a while the oil would drain back into the pan and then leak out the fill tube or some other place. Does that sound reasonable? Has this happened to anyone else? If I bought a deeper pan would that solve the problem, or would I have to just add more oil to it so there really wouldn't be any greater capacity for the oil in the converter? Thanks for any help.

Sounds like your dipstick tube is leaking. There's an O ring on it, not too much of a job. Check first that the oil isn't coming from the front or rear seal. The rear one can be changed easy, the front one requires pulling the trans.

Thanks. The only place I have seen it dripping is from the front of the pan. But That is the lowest place on the transmission so I guess that's not too helpful. But the dipstick tube does come down right there. I'll check that out. Thanks again.

what the tran. shop said is not true. they are pulling your leg. sitting still the pan gasket is under oil anyway if you put a bigger pan on you add more oil to it so it will be full. sitting still and leaking is something leaking that's under oil, like the pan gasket, dip stick tube. where the shift lever goes through the case, if it was the front seal, it wont leak sitting still because its above the oil. i believe r pope is right about the dip stick. if its dripping off of the right side.
