Tranny questions
I've got my engine and tranny out of my '31 Model A - it's a 302 with a C4. I've never messed with a tranny much and my question is about a few things that I want to make sure I take care, as the tranny has been leaking. My main reason for pulling the engine and tranny is to clean them up, make sure they're leak free and then dress them up with some polished aluminum and chrome "goodies".
One question I have is regarding the speedometer cable. It would appear some of the fluid leak may be coming form this area. Now I've pulled out the cable, and there is obvoiusly an O-ring where the cable end plugs in to the tranny - and I'll definitely replace that. What seals the rest of the assembly - where the cable transitions from the calbe in to the gear. I've gotta believe this may be one other place where it ccould potentially leak, but am not positive.
The next question is what are the other major places where I should possibly replace something, as it's hard to determine where some of it's coming from. The pan was definitely the bigges culprit and the seal where the drive shaft goes in looks nice and dry.
The next question is regarding the tranny dip stick. Obviously it's pretty tight in the '31 and the tranny dip stick is not accessible unless you force things. This was like this when I bought it, but I'm thinking someone makes custom tranny dip sticks that are longer - any thoughts out there? I definitely can't put it back the way I found it.
Again, my main goal is to get the engine and tranny "prettied up" and get them back in drip free.
Thanks,

There should be a small seal inside the speed-O gear that seals when it's on the cable...... they tend to leak if the car has sat for a long time
As for the dip stick Lokar makes a flexable one out of s/s braided
hose look for their ad in most of you car mags. They have a pic of it in their ad

I've built some dipstick tubes out of smaller tubing with some pretty tight bends, then welded up a dipstick using a speedo cable core with the end notched for a "full" mark. Works great.

Cable Seal Question
MrMopar - that seal on the cable - it that something ya have to get from the dealer? I got a pretty good feeling mine is leaking, and even if it's not, I'm not taking any chances.

Well the ones I got from the dealer came in a small parts kit for the trans....... not just the seal
Find a local trans shop and see if you can get one from them
This seal goes INSIDE the speed-o gear NOT on the end of the cable
When it leaks it lets the trans oil out through the cable housing my first thought was to get a housing that is covered in plastic on the outside well that would stop it from leaking on the ground "BUT" it would then pump the oil up to the speed-o head..... not good!
Thats how I found out there was a seal in there. Was nice they let me know rather than just selling me the cable I wanted
