    More TH 350 help needed

Started this thread a couple weeks ago.http://www.clubhotrod.com/t16827.html

The govenor gear was stripped so I relaced the whole unit. Still no up shift from first. I have vacuum to the modulator (also new).

    Any suggestions?

When you installed the new governor, did you make sure to see is the governor valve was free? To make sure, grab it in your hands and hold it with the gear pointing up, with your other hand, squeeze the bottom pieces together. When you do that, the gear moves up, let go, it goes down. It dosent take much to get them stuck. If it is stuck, a good wash in solvent could release it. At the worst, take the gear off and inspect the valve. You could have just replaced the gear.

Nope didnt check that, thats a new one to me. So your saying to 1- hold up right 2 squeeze the moving wings (lack of terminology) that are pushed out by the springs 3- look to see if the plastic gear is moving up and down?

You got 2/3 right. Hold it with the gear pointing up. Squeeze wings. Under the gear, in the metal stem, there are two slits, look in the slits. The valve is in there. That valve should move up and down. The gear stays still.

OK, I cleaned up the old one and now I can see what you mean by the valve moving up and down. Tomorrow Ill pull the NEW governor and see if that valve is stuck. Guess I should have just replaced the gear. I figured for $20 I might as well replace the whole thing if I was there anyway.

OK, I pulled the new governor. Gear was stripped again. Whats the next move. Obviously there is a problem with the gear turning the governor. Is there something that can be replaced by pulling the tailshaft rather that the whole tranny.

Damn that sucks. I hate to say it but I think you are going to have to consult with a transmission shop. Without being able to see your transmission, its hard to pin point the problem because there are various causes. First and foremost, the case bushing could be bad. The case bushing is in the very back of the case, not the tailshaft housing but the case. The tailshaft housing bushing could be worn out causing it to wear out the case bushing. The case could be worn out were the steel stem of the governor rides. There is a steel slug that helps line up the governor by fitting inside the top of the governor gear. It could also be the half bubble cover that covers the governor. It helps manage runout of the governor. If it is dented too far in, the governor can be tight. If it is bubbled out more than it should be, the rotation of the output shaft will try to spit it out. I hope this helps. Like i said, it might be time to consult a shop. Good luck man.
