    powerglide

lets say I am an idiot when it comes to automatic transmissions. I am drag racing an early eighties malibu that I bought turnkey. big block with a powerglide. last week when I pulled high gear the trans case cracked along side the cooling line bosses which I know is a common problem. I took a stock power glide and pulled it apart for the case. the broken case has a sticker on it that says RW peformance transmission on it. just by looking at it I didn't see any modifications to the case. I took every thing out and installed it in the stock case. didnt see much of a difference except the pump by the tailshaft and no govenor. I have a revers manual valve body. when I installed the trans in the car and started it (on jack stands of course), put it in reverse and the wheels started to turn in reverse but as soon as I touched the throttle they go forward. any idea where I went wrong?

are you saying the busted trans didnt have a rear pump, but the one you have now do? i would think there would be a dif. in the valve body.

no, I'm saying that I took everything out of the busted trans and put it in the new case exactly as it came out. to the best of my knowledge. I think it was just a directional plate in the rear instead of a pump.

its hard to say what you got, but one ? i would have, is the case with the rear pump the same as the case without a rear pump. they didnt put that rear pump in them but a few yrs. and im not sure how they eliminated the rear pump, by just blocking it off or building a new case.

ok, let me restate that. when I took the rear pump off of the stock one there was a steel plate between the pump and the housing which made the pump obvious. howeve when I removed the rear "pump" from the modified one there was a gasket. the noticeable difference was at the bottom. the steel plate had two large port holes one each side of center. the modified had only one large port hole in the gasket to the left side of center, I did not remove the gasket because I did not hav an identical one in the kit. I assumed this was a modified part. it was lighter and thinner I believe, but outside looked the same. it may have been a pump. the housings looked the same.

Can I suggest that you call RW, explain that you bought the car with the trans and tell them you are trying to get by with a stock case.....they should be able to help you. If not, dont buy from them again!! (not that you have anyway)

I thought abut calling them but I don't know who they are. can't find no info on rw performance transmission. (it may be rtw but I can't find them either. any info here would also be helpful. I ordered a book on powerglide transmissions so I should be able to figure it out eventually.
