3 speed floor conversion
Hello All, This is my first post so please forgive me.
I have a 66 Comet that had a 289 and 3 speed column shifter. The car came with the floor shift coversion kit but no instruction. I have pulled the motor and tranny but I can't seem to figure out how to get the shifter on the tranny.
Does the shifter mount to the tranny or do I have to rig something on the floor to mount the shifter too?
Thanks for the assistance,
Big Mac

hey mac the last 3 spd conversin i had was mounted to the tranny there should be some brackets with the shifter assy that would allow you to do this. i think they bolt onto area where the tail sahft housing is bolted to the main transmission good luck
o yeah welcome to the site lots of neat stuff and smart people here

Yeah those mystery shifters had some small angle brackets that worked great if the bolts stayed tight. Once u get the shifter where u want it put some tack welds on the brackets, and it will shift much better and it wont loosen up so much. Man I miss those days!Choose your battles well===If it dont go chrome it

Yup, what Al said. You are missing the brackets that go to the tailshaft mount bolts.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

when you do get it mounted, remember that the shift arms on the side cover have to point up, not down as the stock ones did.

Does anyone know where to get the bracket?

That is the same shifter used on early Mustangs and it bolts directly to the tailshaft, the reason the arms are so long. My guess is your transmission doesn't have the bosses to mount the shifter or they aren't drilled. It's too late tonight, but I have a spare 3 speed that came out of a '66 Mustang and tomorrow I'll post some pictures. By the way, IMHO, the shifters are junk, they are difficult and expensive to rebuild and they don't have a reverse lock-out. I put a Hearst in mine years ago which requires, in a Mustang, cutting the floor left of center and mounting it at the point where the tranny mounts to the bellhousing.Ken Thomas

That is "in my own humble opinion" If u get the right parts man they should be able to get all the right brackets for the job. That is they would order the right shifter the first time. Lots o luck on that.Choose your battles well===If it dont go chrome it
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
