    Transmission input/output shaft seals

Hi all - am trying to replace front and rear shaft seals on a 700R4 Transmission - how should I remove the old ones? is there a special tool, or can I just try to pry them out w/screwdriver/or? Many Thanks - charlyg

Generally you have to beat and bang them out with whatever tools are good for beating and banging with. Don't get overzealous, it is possible to crack the tailshaft housing by being too rough with it. The seals are pressed in tight and are hard to get out. For the install, I put a tiny bit of Permatex #2 around the outside of the seal.

My own favorite is to use an awl ( or old screwdriver sharpened to a point) to punch a small onto the metal part of the seal. Then screw in one of the small body slide hammers and pop the seal out. Pops even the most stuborn in 1 or 2 hits and you don't take the chance of screwing up the housing the seal goes in.
