It was kinda funny my little brother not knowing much about car's ect. called me this morning and said he found one I was like great he told me where to go on the net and the first thing he said was Edsel.com LOL he was thinking thoe...

Thanks Pat that putts us in a good ball park, but we are looking for the one thats in the steering wheel and only has two buttons I think. As you know there's not much room in a 59'. For the seats we are using two Jaguar bucket's forgot which year then we are going to run the middle console coming from under the dash down in between the seats. Thats where the head unit, bag switches, whippers, ect. will be hid in a flip up compartment.

I saw an article in this month's Street Rodder magazine titled "From Hot Rod to High-Tech, Formula 1 goes street" By Ryan Manson. They show a couple of "paddle shifters" that might work for ya! That would look pretty cool. However, they are all electrnic too. Check it out if you get a chance.

Both my '56 Dodge D500 and my '62 Dodge Dart (a "big" Dart) had factory push-button shifters on the dash just to the left of the wheel.
I don't know what years Chrysler products started, and quit, using them, but my experience with them was totally satisfactory, and I raced the D500.
If a "typewriter", as we called them, could be could be found today, I don't have any idea what would be involved to adapting one to a 727 that didn't come with one. I presume they were solenoid operated.
Jim
Note: My presumptions have a way of being wrong.

Thanks guys for all the help. The Mooneyes is the one were looking into now but we don't like the keypad to many buttons and kinda 80's Night Rider looking. The paddle shifter is neat but still not what were looking for. I wish I could find more info on the Berry White GTX or even a picture of the inside would be nice..

OK on the paddle shifter could you not use the paddle and just wire two buttons and put them into the wheel? How exactly does the paddle make it shift? For. example when you pull back the paddle does it click a button inside the column?

Thanks Pat... Here's a few pics we are a lot further now. That's just a mock up cab and we have the 502 setting in it now. Just don't have any updated pics yet. Sorry for the quality of the pics the camera is a bit touchy...

The paddle shifters look cool BUT THEY STILL REQUIRE A NORMAL SHIFTER! To use park, reverse, and neutral, the "normal" shifter is used. The paddle shifters only control the upshifts and downshifts while the trans is in drive. That sucks because it would be cool to get rid of the shifter on the floor (or on the column)

Retro-Tech finally came out with the two buttons in the steering wheel, and I just talked to the guy from Retro-Tech and they are just about finished with our wheel I got a pic from his today. Looks killer IMO. A tad expensive it was $995 for the smart-shift and $1000 to machine the buttons and everything. Here is a pick of the Torque Thrust steering wheel wrapped in bone leather.
