NP 231 Transfer case question
I've got a 231 transfer case that has an electric pickup for the speedo. Is there a way to convert this to a mechanical speedo output of am I pretty much stuck with what it is? Reason being is the guages and lockup conversion kit I already have are boh for mechanical speedometers.

You can buy a gizmo that does what you want:

It aint cheap and it aint pretty. Make sure your pulse rate is
compatible with the box....there are three GM pulse rates and
who knows how many for other brands
The 231 was available with a mechanical speedo in the earlier models unless someone put a SYE kit in it. Are you jeeping this thing?

Ouch....
Don't think I'll be going that route. Actually, its being bolted up behind a mildly built Chevy 350/700R4 combo and then dropped into an S-10. Will be really kewl to light up all 4 tires just once. LOL

It's a driver's side drop, chain driven aluminum case. Is your
front axle a driver side input also?

yes. The truck already has a 205 (if memory serves) case in it but with a wimpy 2.8 V-6 and 4 spd stick its really not suited for towing my T-Bucket on a trailer.

An S-10 usually came with a 233 or a 231. The 205 is the cast iron case from the big trucks, it is very desirable right now since it is gear drive and will stand up to a V8. The 233/231 is a chain drive case.

205?
I concur, the 205 is mega strong and prized among the 'crawlin' crowd, especially with a dual case reduction kit. The 231 has more gear but isn't as strong."It may be ugly, but it's SLOW!"

Oops, I goofed... the truck has a 207 which was used prior to the introduction of the NP 231. The NP 207 is designed for smaller-displacement engines (input torque rating: 610 lb.-ft.) in vehicles with GVWRs of less than 5,000 pounds.
