There were several Borg Warner 3 speeds put into cars. The strength depends on the model and application. The strongest was the heavy duty T-16. In the 60's it was used in high performance GM applications when the optional 4 speed was not specified. They're fairly rare though, since most high performance buyers opted for the 4 speed.

I can't match the number for the main case, but the part number on the side cover is for a 69-72 Muncie HD three speed (MC-1). The tailhousing part number checks to the same transmission. It's a heavy-duty three-speed. It was actually used in some SS396 Chevelles and similar cars in that time frame.

thanks for the info. i picked the tranny up at a local wrecking yard today for 65.00 and was hoping it was a muncie. i'm going back monday to grab a toploader 3 speed from a maverick "grabber" they quoted me 100.00 for the tranny and shifter assy. one of the two trannies will go behind a 455 in my 65Buick special post coupe.
