    transmission swap question

    Wasssup CHR,
Have a '67 El Camino, except the tranny is blown. I was told it was a 283 with a T16, but then got swapped to a 350. The tranny stayed the same, and is now trash. I was told it needs a T10, any suggestions on what trans I should look for and where can I find one?

    Thanks...MAX

you want to keep it standard or u wanna go automatic? do you race or do you "putt-putt"? how deep are your pockets? how many gears do you want? whats the rear end ratio? I ask all of these because if you don't want a standard, a nice TH350 or a 700r4 would go great for a cruiser. If you race, you obviously want a little stronger built tranny. Some transmissions cost more than others. Sometimes a 6 speed is more fun than a 3 speed or an automatic. Your rear end ratio matters because if you drive the car everyday, then you wouldn't want a 4.11 and a 3 speed. So you can select your trans. according to these questions basically.

But if you want the t10, which is a pretty good 4 speed transmission, eBay is always a pretty good spot to snipe these out. You could also check around at some local transmission shops and see what they can offer?

I'd like to keep it a manual since that's the way it came, but if I absolutely HAD to I'd turn it into an auto. It's gonna be a daily driver, but I do plan on racing it now and then @ San Antonio Speedway. But it's primary use is gonna be to get me around. Haven't check the ratio's yet due to time restraints...(we know there's never enough time to work on the project), but I'm gonna get to it soon. I'll post some pictures once i figure out how.

    Thanks for the reply Hopper.

    Never heard of a t16, I'll guess it's a 3spd. A t-10 or Munciewould be a straight swap,most super t-10's require a different clutch disc,fine spline.Don't even bother looking at a Saginaw,it won't hold up. Hank

Use the "go advanced" then "manage attachments" feature. Photos resized to about 400X250 work best.

T=10's show up on eBay occasionally, picked one up with a cracked mount (tigged it) awhile back for $375.00. Also, they are available brand new at Summit and a bunch of other sites, around $1400-$1500. Might want to consider one of the Tremec 5 or 6 speeds, too. Seen them brand new for $1500 and up, the really good one's will handle 500 ft. lbs. torque and run about $2200 and up.....

Thanks for the photo info, I'l try it tonite...so stay tuned. I've seen the Tremec in Summit, and I got my eye on a Richmond 5-speed on eBay too. They should bolt right up to that 350, right?

Well here's the deal...The Elky has a bad lean in the right rear. I mean bad, so I figured it was the original springs. since the bed bounce like a trampoline when shook by hand. So I jacked it up to get a visual on how it would sit. when I let it back down it was level. Hmmm? So I jack it back up and what do I see, the R. Rear spring is snapped in 2 pieces!!! No wonder it leans. Everything else seems kosher as far as I can see. But I have no clue ehat would cause a coil spring to snap like that. However, it was pretty old from what I can tell. Got me a new pair coming. I'll be putting them in on either Subday or Monday. Later Club Hot Rod....

Yeah I hear that...I had a 1968 Cougar XR-7 from Miami once, same thing. Frame & body ROTTED away. But this is a Texas car. SOLID, bro. Other than the rattlesnake living in the lower control arm that is.
