700R4 Overdrive Tranmitions
Any likes or dislikes with respect to the GM 700R4 overdrive Transmitions? I am looking to hook one up to a mildly hot 350. It' s rated at 300 hp and I wonder if anyone has had bad luck with one.

Lots of people have had bad luck with them - except it isn't luck. It's improper setup. They will work fine IF you provide proper cooling, IF you provide proper lockup, and IF you set the TV cable correcly. People having "bad luck" with 700R4s usually miss one of those requirements.
GM put them in Corvettes with more HP than 300. Th 700R4 in my 93 Vette has 126K miles on it, and it works great.Jack

I went from A TH350 to a TH700R4 with manuel lock out. I came out of a 89 Camero. I has a lower first gear and in overdrive it increased my gas mileage on the highway. I have a s10 and pull a 16' Palm Harbour Boat, I can smoke the tires to no end, the engine puts out about 330HP. I would suggest you putting a Corvette servo in it before you install the tranny and do not put a shift kit in it. It will take the comfort out of the shifts ( real neck jurker), the Corvette servo will give you a good snap. Steve Roy srsv8dime@bellsouth.net

by the way, it's a 4 speed auto, not 5. it can take some abuse, not doubt. my 82 k5 blazer has one. i don't have 300hp, but i take it offroad whenever i get a chance and it's going strong. my 94 c1500 has the 4l60e, which is similar. basically a computer controlled version. it's not doing half bad, either.
