    Please identify this transmission...

     



    Hi everyone, I need help identifying this tranny...it was pulled from a 63 Nova that had 3 on the tree. Im thinking its a Saginaw 3 speed but dont know how to reference the casting numbers to find out for sure. I want to sell it but want to make sure I have my facts straight first.

    Looks a lot like mine.


    Remove the 4 bolts holding the front input shaft/throwout bearing snout (my mind has gone blank and I cant remember the proper name) and look at the input shaft. If it is as fat as the spined portion, it is from a V8 car, if it is shrunken down after it leaves the spines, it is for a 6.

    Here are pictures of mine.


    When I did a similar inquiry about mine, here is what one reply was.


    Here's the way I see it. It's a '65 or older, non-synchro low gear Saginaw. They had 4 bolts on the side cover. In '66 they went all synchro, and have 7 bolts on the cover. The casting date of L271 means December 27, 19X1. The decade is not indicated, but it wouldn't be '71, cuz that would be a syncgro unit. Most likely 1961, and put into an early 1962 model year vehicle.

    Thanks, thats what I figured. I want to throw it on ebay for the sake of getting it off my garage floor, is there a market for these things? or should i not waste my time and just bring it to the junk yard. It needs a total rebuild. Trying to recycle some money for new stuff
    But theres a part of me who wants to keep it and rebuild for a future project, if its worth it...decisions, decisions.

    if you clean it up and paint it silver you will get more money for it on ebay, even if it does need a rebuild.

    To give you some perspective, mine is rebuilt, and came with a brand new Hurst shifter, and I paid $ 29.00 on Ebay. No one else bid. Of course, I paid $ 95.00 in shipping this heavy chunk of metal, but that is another story.

    So, I guess to answer your question, no, they aren't desirable, except to hard-headed old hot rodders like me, who still like a 3 speed for that old time flavor.

    I hear you...its not exactly a diamond in the rough. Im just tired of tripping over things in my garage. I enjoy working in a neat environment. Might as well sell stuff off to people who can use it. Heck, thats how I got alot of my parts too.

    I agree, the 3 speed was fun to drive. Especially the 3 on the tree. But its always nice to sit back and cruise with the TH350 shiftin for me.
