trans operates backwards. r is d and d is r

Hello just finish putting in 351c 2v into a 73 mustang. The engine came from a 73 ranchero, the mustang has a FMX tranny. I don't know the history of the tranny.
When I started the motor and place the tranny in reverse the vehicle moved forward and when I placed the tranny in drive the vehicle moves backwards. Any

Any idea what would cause this problem?

What do your other gears do?? I'm thinking your arm is upside down, compared to the old tranny. What is the rest of the pattern?

    pattern is the same

The selection pattern is the same except for r is drive then neutral then d is reverse.
Do I have to pull the tranny to flip the lever or can I just drop the pan and do it?

I don't know about your tranny, but on a turbo 350 the arm is held on by an external nut. There is a 'double D" shaped spline that lets you flip the arm over and put it back on reversed, then just retighten the nut.

I'll bet that the donor car had a column mounted automatic shifter. Either that, or someone installed a reverse valve body into the donor transmission.

    Your driveshaft is installed backwards...

Lucky you didn't do that obligatory "break in" holeshot

You are missing what I'm asking you. An automatic has certain detents for certain gears. What I want to know is if ONLY D and R are reversed, or are other gears like Low in the wrong place too.

that is the pattern the trans will upshift in reverse, didnt go fast enough to find out if 3 gear exist but 1 to 2 exist in reverse.
So the pattern goes PRND21, R= D and D=R, neutral is still neutral.

You probably got your lever upside down.

If the lever is upside down or backwards....wouldn't P=L1 ?

If neutral is still neutral, then I dont see how it could be the lever. Seems as though a backwards lever (if you could get the linkage to accomodate) would put neutral in the drive position as seen on the gear position indicator.

Could be the driveshaft too like Gusaroo said... ??

Or the axle is installed upside down....

Wasn't there a string issue about this a while back? A guy flipped his axle over when moving it from below the leafs to above (so he didn't have to re-weld spring perches...)

Wasnt there a Seinfeld episode about the Bizarro world
where left was right, up was down, and reverse was drive?

    Thank you for posting this.

Exactly what I was trying to clarify with him. Need to know, when you put it in normal Park what do you get, when you put it in neutral, what do you get, when you put it in 1 and 2 what do you get ? All you have told us us what D and R are............not enough info.

He said it upshifts in reverse... NOT a lever problem.

    Diff is flipped over.
