TH400 differences?
So im getting ready to rebuild my th400 thats going in the sedan and ive got a few questions.
Bought the B&M Transkit, and it said not to be used with transmissions newer than 87. But now i look at the summit site and it doesnt have that disclaimer anymore and the applications go up to 90 now.
Got my trans and noticed trans mount bolts are metric, so now im thinking i may have a newer trans. Was told it came out of an older diesel mini bus, but could it be b/c its canadian built?
So what are the differences between the 64-87 and 87-? th400?

the passages in the case under the valve body are different If you have an over haul kit it comes with 2 valve body gaskets and an expanation sheet on which gaskets fit which year. when you disasemble the trans compair the gaskets the difference is in the middle just forward of half way. If there is a tin id plate on the trans the first number is the year 87 would be 7

Good one cook, thanks fo rthe reminder. Also some of the tranny's have had the tag removed. If it's early enough production, the code you need will be stamped on the rail where the pan mates. If not use the suggestion of studying the gaskets supplied and read the "destructions" to see which is which.

Ihave a TH400 in my car......is there any ID markings that indicate make and model car it was installed in originally? What markings are typically on the trans that provide some identity? Any comments would be appreciated.
Thank you Roger. .
