    700R4 noise ?

    Hey guys:

Been a while since I last posted a question, so here goes. I recently got a 71 Nova with a 700R4 in it. 2500 stall . While she's in park, and idling there's a whining sound coming from the torque converter area . I checked all fluids, there fine. Am I missing something ??

The torque converter is toast. They are famous for whining and even knocking.

If it has the 7 vane pump, it's probably toast. For heavy applications the 10 vane is recommended because of bypassing fluid from wear on the 7 vane.
What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

torque converters mostly make noise when under load in drive or reverse. If you put the car in drive 3 and it still makes noise pull it down to drive 2. If the noice increases its the pump 700s boost pressure in drive 2. If its the punp you will have to cange the converter anyway its full of metal.

Thanks guys. That's what I thought. Looks like I'm tearing down this thing here soon. Oh well. Alows me to put my motor in any clean up and FIX things. Interesting how people do work.

How difficult is it to replace or rebuild the pump in the transmission ?

Does your rod have a trans cooler? 700R4s will not live without adequate cooling.

Just your typical run of the mill through the radiator set-up.

That's good. However, with the higher stall, you really need to think about an auxilliary cooler. Also, adjustment of the TV cable is critical.

TV (Throttle Valve) Cable is what we used to call the "kick-down" cable. It controls the pressures in the trans. Google "700r4 adjusting tv cable " and you'll find lots of info.

Good posts by Jack, Cook, and Viking, also, spring for an inline filter. It really is a peace of mind for life of this tranny when it's back on the road. Very affordable too.
