poor old ford
i finally got my old 62 galaxie 500XL convertable driving yesterday..i was going down the road kinnda getting on it a little when smoke poured out of everywhere..the trans spit the fluid out of the dip stick tube, caught the engine on fire i got it out let it cool off added more fluid.. it moved but still putting the fluild out real bad..so i cut off piece of heater hose plugged it with a old spark plug and plugged off the filler tube..got home with it winning and barely moving..should i try to fix it or just take the one outta my 63 and put in it then rebuild this one?..ive rebuilt many gm 350's and 400's mopar 727's and some fmx's and c6's but never did a cruiseomatic anyone got any ideasif you cant run with the big dogs

If you have the experience on the other trannies as you stated, you should find this to be a cake walk. Red flags are going off here. Find the venting problem that caused this epoisode first. You will have greater success when building this tranny if you do.What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

It probably has a plugged filter making the fluid come out the dipstick,try changing the fluid and filter before giving up on it and you can drain the convertor too. Jeff

thank ya'll.. i'll look inside the pan before i pull it out..maybe can save myself a job..i looked under it and somewhere in its life someone plugged off the vent tube..is that common on theses trannys..i have 0 experience on these ..used to be a GM man till i got these 3 old fords..i like these fe blocks seems easy to produce power with.if you cant run with the big dogs

That is probably your problem,a previous owner had problems with the fluid coming out the vents due to a plugged filter and plugged the vent thinking it would cure it. Make sure the cooler lines are not pinched and too close to the exhaust too. Jeff

thanks jeff i will do that when i go to the shop later..its still sitting out side i have to pull it in and jack it up and take a look..hoping that is all it is eaiser than pulling it and i want to take it to the swap meet this monthif you cant run with the big dogs
