    transmission swap

     



    i'm working on a 1983 gmc i think it's a ck3500 crew cab dully the trans is a 3 speed thm 400. my qustion is what 3 speed overdrive could be used in it's place.on a 454

    700r4 would probably be your best bet.

    A 700-R4 is a decent overdrive tranny, but I would research it to make sure it can hold up to the power of the 454.

    Me personally, I would save up and put a Gear-vendors overdrive unit on it. It could handle the power, plus you would go from a 3-speed to a 6-speed.

    The only down side is it costs about 2 grand

    Just my 2 pennies.

    what about a two speed rear end (could 1 be found at a junk yard) i had one on a old bus once not sure what year, it was air operated

    why not a 5 speed out of the newer trucks? 88 and up has them 5th is od, there were may of those behind the FI 454's
