A 700-R4 is a decent overdrive tranny, but I would research it to make sure it can hold up to the power of the 454.
Me personally, I would save up and put a Gear-vendors overdrive unit on it. It could handle the power, plus you would go from a 3-speed to a 6-speed.
The only down side is it costs about 2 grand
Just my 2 pennies.I ain't dumb, I just ain't been showed a whole lot!

why not a 5 speed out of the newer trucks? 88 and up has them 5th is od, there were may of those behind the FI 454's
You're welcome Mike, glad it worked out for you. Roger, it's taken a few years but my inventory of excess parts has shrunk a fair bit from 1 1/2 garage stalls to about an eight by eight space. ...
