    Linkage bolt blues

When I kept having problems with 4 spd. shifter hang-ups on my 64' Impala SS I crawled under see what was up. Sure enough, several nuts were loose on the linkage bolts right on the trans. While trying to tighten the nut on reverse, the bolt broke off! I can barely get a nut on whats left and that's w/o a lock washer. How do you remove that bolt (stud) and replace it? Can it be done externally? Any info/advise is appreciated. As a last resort I can get thinner nut, I guess. thanks.

Are they bolts or studs? If they are studs, you have to open the tranny and replace the reverse arm, or if possible, drill and tap it, or weld a stud to it.

Anyone can cut one up, but! only some can put it back together looking cool!
Steel is real, anyone can get a glass one.

If it's a bolt, try drilling a small (1/8") hole in it and use an easy out. If that doesn't work, then get out the welder.

If it was a nut and it's the reverse arm, you'll have to pull thr trans.

    Good Luck

Thanks for the input. It's hard/impossible to know if the bolt is permanently attached to the reverse piece or if it's a removable stud. An easy out would be difficult as there's no room to work. I don't want to risk trying to turn it with pliers as I'd ruin the remaining threads. Hmmmmm. I've never done any welding but suppose I could take it in someplace that does that kind of work. Thanks again.

Havent had my muncie apart in a while but if yours is a muncie you will have to pull the tail section off. Hey Denny that diagram from D&L will probly help. Also don,t lose the little ball bearing that is in there. I can,t recall just how it works but there is a ball bearing you don,t want to lose.
