    700r4 rpm shift points

In normal driving, just easy acceleration from a stop, not WOT, at what rpm's do your 700r4's shift... I'm used to a 350, which shifted at a low rpm. Now, test driving mine (700r4) , it seems like it would never shift... got up to about 2300, and letting off the gas, it shifted... then accelerating harder, it shifted at 2500 or so... does this seem right? This is only from first to second. thanks - kip

I think it's because of the low first gear in the 700R4s.

It sounds like the TV cable adjustment is not set right.
Do you have the right linkage adapter for your carb?
do you have the correct cable bracket for your application?
Did you set the TV adjustment with a pressure gauge?
    more info is needed.

That's way too high for a 1-2 shift.

I purchased the interior electronics for the tranny, the cable, the cable bracket and the throttle adaptor from Bowtie overdrives, so I feel pretty confident the parts are all correct. I know that setting the cable is critical for the tranny to work right and last a long time, and there in lies the problem. I have tried what I have read and this is what I 've got: the slider on the cable is as far back (away from the carb) as it will go, and the cable itself is tight. It seems that if I let the slider move forward, then the cable gets too loose. I did not set the cable with a pressure gauge... Sooooo, is it to be expected that the slider should be out somewhat???? I read where the cable needs to be tight at the idle position. thanks - kip

    700r4 and rpms

OK, I got this almost figured out. Moving the tv cable towards the carb lowers the rpm at which it shifts - but it also shifts very softly. Move the cable adjustment toward the firewall, the higher the rpm, and the firmer the shift - so where's the sweet spot? What's the ideal rpm for shifting so as not to burn up the tranny? thanks - kip

You need to get the instructions for setting up the TV cable from Bowtie Overdrives. It's best to set the TV cable with a pressure gauge plugged into your trans. It's available on their website, but it takes some hunting to find it. Without the gauge, you're just guessing.

You're correct in that there needs to be some tension in the cable. The normal way to set it is to set the cable a little bit tight. Then back it off until the pressure stops dropping. Then you tighten it up until you get about 5 psi increase.

You can guess if you want, but the only way to be accurate is with a gauge.

Dude! You need to make sure your ratios are right!

I'm sure the ratios are cool, in that I bought the right carb and cable stuff from bowtie overdrives... so now I'll get the pressure guage and temp guage and set by the guage... thanks much - kip

    Got IT!

I think I have it. The car shifts at comfortable and affordable shift points and the pressures are good as well. It took forever, but this might actually be it. thanks for the help - kip
