    Tremac T-5 weaknesses?

Pulled the rear cover off the T5 to replace the speedo drive gear, as I have 3.55 rear end gearing, and needed to get a better ratio for correct speedo readings. Then trying to re-install, I couldn't get it to sit flush again, and figured I must have moved the change rod. Tried and tried to get it in the correct position, but to no avail, so decided to take off the mid cover, to look inside.

I was happy to see that the gears all looked good, no chipped teeth or unusual wear patterns. I did have a couple of broken pads on the shift forks, so I am glad I pulled the cover. These pads are little white nylon pieces that sit on either side of the shift forks, I gather to prevent metal to metal contact..I have to wait for these to come out of the USA, as none in Canada, which I thought was bloody odd.

So now I have it somewhat apart, should I be looking at any particular area, that is a known weak spot on these trannys?

I am replacing the shifter rod O ring, and the rear yoke seal. What about that split bushing just behind the seal, is that usually replaced. It does have a bit of wear, but I'm not even sure of it's function there, and how much wear is normal?

    Thanks, Bill

shifters without stops will bend/break forks. at least if you shift hard. i dont know what you use this for. if your using it for more than just cruising around, invest in a nice shifter. i run a hurst and like it for what its worth. i was also breaking alot of the retainer clips that hold the syncro onto a gear and keep it from popping out. i dont remember the tech name, but there are 3 in each syncro. it would always end up breaking when shifting into 3rd...then jam there. i also blew quite a few first gears and third gears on the cluster. slicks, 6000rpm launches and power shifting ate plenty of the stock wc t5s i had.

I have a Hurst shifter, with the stops.

I don't know what will stop the retainers for the synchros you are talking about from breaking. Do you think it was from hard shifting when you were racing, or?

Most of my time in the seat will be simple cruising, and hopefully some Auto cross (Slalom), where hard shifts are not needed. I like to drive somewhat spirited, but I don't go crazy..

Suggest you contact Mike Forte at Forte Parts Connection (look for the banner above, or google him). Mike's the most knowledgable guy on the T5 and TREMECS I have found. He will be setting me up with a flywheel back package soon.

im sure it was from shifting hard. it only seemed to happen at the drag strip.

The guy that did my T-5 takes the synchro retainer clips and puts a small weld in the four corners (on the back side) to keep them from breaking.

    Hi,
The fork pads wear when you drive with your hand rested on the shifter. Shifter that have shift stops NEED to be adjusted with the jam nuts real tight with Locktite. If the shift stop gets loose your transmission problems are just about to start.
