HELP!! No Gears Work!!!
Hi all!!
Ive just got my car running for the first time in 15 years and I went to select "D" to find the engine was still idling like it was in "N" no change at all, none of the gears work at all, the car just sits there idling while I shift the stick through the gears.
My friend says it looks like the box has no fluid and after checking it didnt could this be the issue dont wanna throw £30 worth of fluid in it to find its nothing to do with it.
Any help appreciated!
Many Thanks, Rich!

If there isn't fluid in the tranny, it will not move. When I was in high school, I put a v8 in my car with a floor shift instead of the column shift. I set the gear shift linkage in the same spot as the old tranny and we started it up and ran it for a couple of minutes and checking for leaks. The next day I bought some tranny fluid and put it in because I knew there wasn't any. I started it up and got to the front of the car and revved it up at the carb because I didn't have the throttle linkage hooked up and that thing took off. It hit my friends camaro and pushed it to the end of the drive before I got it shut down. So, I recommend putting fluid in the car and when you start it, stay in until you know it will not take off without you.

Lol! or just leave it idling in "P" or "N" lol! so I shoud fill it while its running?? also I didnt think auto cars started in a motion gear??
How long will it take the fluid to get into the system and move the car??

when I moved the shifter to the floor, I removed the handle from the column shift, but left all the electrical which meant that as long as the column was in park or neutral, it would start in any gear. Just a minor thing that a 17 year old didn't think of but thought it was pretty cool after getting it figured out. I took a bunch of friends to a place called hell which is a creepy road with trees blocking out all lights. Rumor had it that the area was haunted. And so I would shut it off and move the column shifter out of park and then it would not restart. Scared a number of people doing that.
As far as the fluid goes, I put it in when it is not running and then top it off.

When you installed the tranny, did you slide the torque converter all the way into the trans engaging the pump. Then after the trans has been attached to the engine slide the converter up to the flywheel and bolt it together? You don't have to ask me how I know.

Most cars you have to check while runing in park on level ground. If you over fill it will be a mess and may do damageCharlie

Running the engine with no oil circulating in the transmission will fry the seals and burn up clutches and bands in no time at all. Get some ATF in there!
Merry Christmas ya'll
