TH 400 speed o meter
How do you change the speedometer gear on the tail shaft inside the rear housing? It looks pressed on.Charlie

yep a tin clip with a bolt looks like a Y then you pull the speedo out of the tail it has a o ring so they do get stuck inIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

the one on the shaft itself has a spring loaded clip .. you must pull the tail shaft cover..it is not pressed oniv`e used up all my sick days at work .. can i call in dead ?

I pulled the tail shaft cover off turned the shaft several times looking for clip. No clip looks to be pressed on. and its steel.Charlie

news to me .. but i have`nt looked at a t400 in about 30 yearsiv`e used up all my sick days at work .. can i call in dead ?

The speed o gear is to the rear of the gov. on the same shaft. I don't have a puller with long enough fingers to reach the back of the gear (6.250) from end of shaft. I don't want to disassemble trans to change, got to be a way to remove it.

I agree MOST have a tab or some sort of attaching device. This one dosen't. there must be a tool to get behind the gear and pull it offCharlie

Yep I have the item in the picture but I don't have the electrinics to make my cable driven speedometer go... Ihave the new gear to install just can't get the old one off. the trans came out of a 89 chevy pick-up.Charlie

After a little thought I remembered an old trick I learned back in machinest training about 40 years ago. I first put a punch mark on the gear then put a rag in the housing to catch chips. I then drilled a hole in it. I then drilled a larger hole through the first one. The gear split (YES) I removed it cleaned up the mess, and heated up the new gear in a can of oil. This is to not have it get bigger in one spot more than the rest. I slid the new gear on and finished putting it together. One more thing off my list. Thanks for the help guysCharlie
